How to do Black Tie

We’ve all been there. The moment where you are invited to a Black Tie event and you are filled with both excitement and dread. Yes, that means we can dress up but at the same time, the thought is there, what an earth do we wear?

Does Black Tie mean you have to wear black?

No. In fact Black Tie derives from what the men are expected to wear. So the Black Tie dress for women should indeed compliment the traditional black tie and dinner jacket.

Black Tie is quite vague for us ladies. The easiest way to think of Black Tie for us is Cocktail dresses. The best option if you are not sure is to go long. If you are not comfortable with a long dress then try midi or something around the knee. Never go too short, that way you will avoid feeling out of place.

Don’t be afraid of colour! It is worth taking a look at our collection of Cocktail dresses from a wide range of brands and in other colours other than black. Take a leaf out of Alexa Chung’s book at opt for a bold bright and floor sweeping gown.

Another tip when working out how to do Black Tie is to look up the venue, that will give you some indication of how fancy to go.

Also think about what the occasion is and the people that are inviting you. Is it a 50th Wedding Anniversary or a 21st Birthday Party? That could really be the deciding factor in how much skin is appropriate to show. We love the idea of nude colours as an option, this is a great opportunity to play around with your accessories and neutral colours are also soft and elegant.

The main thing when choosing your outfit of course is to wear something that you are comfortable in! If you feel more happy in something shorter then a classic cocktail mini could be the way to go!

Black is always a great option. You can’t go wrong with a classic and timeless LBD when wondering how to do Black Tie. Especially if you have more than one event coming up and only want to buy one dress.

TIP: A little clever accessorising can totally transform an outfit!

Hang on a tick though…what about Black Tie at a Wedding?

Same rules apply here. Black Tie is the same as Black Tie at any other event. Yes, you should think about how exposed you are, especially if you are going to the service itself. Hats and Fascinators are a great option as well. But not totally necessarily if you are wearing a floor sweeping dress.

If you still feel like you should wear some form of head or hair accessory, then why not go for a sparkly hair grip or a delicate headband.

Help! I have a date straight after work!

We’ve all been there. The “office to out” dilemma. But panic not there is a simple recipe to avoid disaster and gain easy glam points without getting yourself stressed out. After all, you are going out out and the important thing is to have fun.

Freshen up your face & hair-do

Remove make up if it looks dull after a day in the office. There is nothing worse then looking like you are at the end of the night already before the night has even begun. So freshen up with face wipes and moisturise before adding your tinted moisturiser or foundation. DO NOT wear too much make up. This is a big turn off.

1.So opt for either a smokey eye or lippy and yes we know you may be tired but there is no need to cake on the layers. It will not make you look more awake.

2. Keep it fresh and light and add a luminous glow with the Balm Luminizer – Highlighting Powder.

3. We swear by dry shampoo, carry one in your handbag and you’ll never be caught off-guard. A common misconception is that dry shampoo is for dirty hair, infact it increases volume and helps hold the style. Consider is a face lift for your hair. So for a little pick me up, try this one from Batiste.

Wear red

We’ve all heard the rumour that red is the colour of attraction. It exudes confidence and will make you stand out in all the right ways. It is also the colour of love (pause for wolf whistle). So ladies, no matter what your personal style is or how formal you have to dress for the office, there is something for you! The great thing about red is as well is that there are SO many shades to choose from.

TIP: Pick your dress the night before. Classic styles that suit the office often are the same style that work for dinner and drinks too. So no need to panic! If none of the above dresses are quite your thing then check out our Red Dress Page, where we have even more styles and shades to choose from.

Best foot forward

Perhaps the icing on the cake, is your choice of footwear. When you have a date straight after work, taking an extra pair of shoes with you to the office could be a good idea. That way you don’t have to totter around all day and then dance all night in the same pair of shoes. Unless you are some kind of Heel Wearing Super Hero (yes! They do exist!).

Your shoes will either dress up or down your outfit, so think carefully, where is it your off to this evening? Elegant and strappy, pointed with a stiletto or slightly more sturdy heel (could be an idea if there is a lot of walking involved!)

Choosing the perfect Bridesmaid dresses

It’s that time of the year again. Love is in the air and happy couples up and down the UK are getting hooked. Finding the perfect dress for your bridesmaids is a tricky business, there are so many aspects to think of. Here at MyDress we have tried to simplify that process (just a little!) and make it a much, much, much more relaxing and hopefully enjoyable experience. So that everyone walking down the aisle (including the bridesmaids) will have a smile on their faces.

Nowadays there are far more options out there and that is a good thing (we promise!). We are going to show you how to choose the perfect bridesmaid dresses AND only in 5 easy steps. All in the hope that we can take just a pinch of stress out of the whole wedding planning process. Our aim is to give you peace of mind, keep your bridesmaids happy and of course YOU.

1. The style

First think about your personal style, the theme of the day, what “look” do you want to create. The day should represent you and your future husband. Think about your personal style. Do you both dream of a traditional affair, are you dreaming of a fairytale wedding, a hippie boho wedding in the countryside, a beach wedding with your hair blowing in the wind as you stand on some beautiful isolated beach (somewhere hot…or not) or is your style a little quirky?

2. The location

Where will you host the wedding itself? (and the reception?) Assuming your personal style will be reflected somewhat in your choice of location. Think about what will work in the photos as well. Perhaps the wedding is outside or in a barn and your surroundings are bursting with wild flowers… your bridesmaid dresses need to compliment the surroundings.

Ever wondered where the most dreamy and inspiring locations in the UK are to get married are? Click here to find out. With locations such as these, who needs to leave the UK.

3. The fit

Wow, this is essential! Your bridesmaids need to be happy and feel comfortable. Remember that they may not have the exact same taste as you, so try and find a good balance. Of course, you chose them to be your bridesmaids, so we would imagine that they are close to you and know you and love you. But DO bare in mind that us women can be a complicated bunch and there is nothing worse then being squeezed into a dress that looks terrible! Also, it wouldn’t be a great thing for the photos, now would it? (from a purely selfish point of view). But think about it, an unhappy bridesmaid in a badly fitting dress, now, it doesn’t take a genius to realise that that won’t make for the best photos.

4. The colour

OK, let’s not get too stresed on this one. Yes, yes, we realise this can get us ladies into quite a pickle…but don’t tie yourself up in knots.

Something to think about, while we are on this topic,  is that neutral tones are more likely to flatter ALL your ladies (especially if amongst your maids there is a wide range of skin tones and hair colours) so choose a colour that isn’t just in trend now, a one hit wonder… in years to come when you flick through the picks and have to explain to your grandkids, that yep, that colour is indeed “masala”…and you find yourself saying “yep, exactly, like chicken tikka masala”.

What does your choice of Bridesmaid dresses say about you?

5. Create a mood board

Now it’s time to get those creative ideas flowing, finally the time has come to take those dreams and make them a reality. But where on earth to begin? Well, nowadays we are spoilt with recources.  Use instagram, pinterest, old photos, vintage shops and of course the internet to help you to create a mood board. This “mood board” can be on the computer, scraps from magazines, get creative (there are tons of options!) Once you begin this will give you a clearer idea of the overall look you want to create, making it easier to see what still needs to be thought through and organised.
