How To Dress Up For Halloween

All Hallow’s Eve is just around the corner and that means the parties too. But that doesn’t mean you have to do tacky!

WHAT IS THE REAL STORY BEHIND HALLOWEEN?

This tradition is in fact Celtic, that means what know is the UK, Ireland and Northern France. Oh and one more thing…it certainly wasn’t a tacky event or an excuse to wear as little clothing as possible! After all ladies, it is the mark of the changing seasons and it’s getting cold outside.

All Hallow’s Eve is actually the mark of the end of the summer and the harvest and the beginning of the colder nights and shorter days. It was thought that on this day the 31st October the boundary between the living world and the world of the dead became blurred. Meaning that the ghosts and spirits of past would return to the living and this is why crops would ruin and the harvest end.

BUT WHY DO WE DRESS UP ON HALLOWEEN?

The idea comes from on a day that is so filled with the idea of death, people would dress up to poke fun at death, proving they were not afraid. So you see dressing up in a teeny tiny witches costume isn’t going to scare any spirits now is it?!

SO HOW SHOULD YOU DRESS ON HALLOWEEN?

Well with the Autumn Winter trends this year it could not be more perfect. Really! There is a gothic romance filling the air. That means plenty of black lace and silky fabrics…oh and capes!

We found that the brand Lavish Alice could be the perfect choice for embracing the romantic style. These three black dresses are a great alternative to the classic LBD.

DRESS UP OR JUST DRESS UP?

So now the conundrum is whether to dress up in fancy dress. We’re talking scary make-up, devil horns etc… OR to dress up, as in embrace the Halloween theme but in a more stylish way. It is certainly a time then to think elegant, slinky and lace.

Long Sleeved Black Dresses

But perhaps you are after something longer and with a little sex appeal? Well then, these three maxi dresses will give you just that. We have chosen three of the best with plunging necklines. Starting left to right, left being the most subtle choice.

Choosing the perfect Bridesmaid dresses

It’s that time of the year again. Love is in the air and happy couples up and down the UK are getting hooked. Finding the perfect dress for your bridesmaids is a tricky business, there are so many aspects to think of. Here at MyDress we have tried to simplify that process (just a little!) and make it a much, much, much more relaxing and hopefully enjoyable experience. So that everyone walking down the aisle (including the bridesmaids) will have a smile on their faces.

Nowadays there are far more options out there and that is a good thing (we promise!). We are going to show you how to choose the perfect bridesmaid dresses AND only in 5 easy steps. All in the hope that we can take just a pinch of stress out of the whole wedding planning process. Our aim is to give you peace of mind, keep your bridesmaids happy and of course YOU.

1. The style

First think about your personal style, the theme of the day, what “look” do you want to create. The day should represent you and your future husband. Think about your personal style. Do you both dream of a traditional affair, are you dreaming of a fairytale wedding, a hippie boho wedding in the countryside, a beach wedding with your hair blowing in the wind as you stand on some beautiful isolated beach (somewhere hot…or not) or is your style a little quirky?

2. The location

Where will you host the wedding itself? (and the reception?) Assuming your personal style will be reflected somewhat in your choice of location. Think about what will work in the photos as well. Perhaps the wedding is outside or in a barn and your surroundings are bursting with wild flowers… your bridesmaid dresses need to compliment the surroundings.

Ever wondered where the most dreamy and inspiring locations in the UK are to get married are? Click here to find out. With locations such as these, who needs to leave the UK.

3. The fit

Wow, this is essential! Your bridesmaids need to be happy and feel comfortable. Remember that they may not have the exact same taste as you, so try and find a good balance. Of course, you chose them to be your bridesmaids, so we would imagine that they are close to you and know you and love you. But DO bare in mind that us women can be a complicated bunch and there is nothing worse then being squeezed into a dress that looks terrible! Also, it wouldn’t be a great thing for the photos, now would it? (from a purely selfish point of view). But think about it, an unhappy bridesmaid in a badly fitting dress, now, it doesn’t take a genius to realise that that won’t make for the best photos.

4. The colour

OK, let’s not get too stresed on this one. Yes, yes, we realise this can get us ladies into quite a pickle…but don’t tie yourself up in knots.

Something to think about, while we are on this topic,  is that neutral tones are more likely to flatter ALL your ladies (especially if amongst your maids there is a wide range of skin tones and hair colours) so choose a colour that isn’t just in trend now, a one hit wonder… in years to come when you flick through the picks and have to explain to your grandkids, that yep, that colour is indeed “masala”…and you find yourself saying “yep, exactly, like chicken tikka masala”.

What does your choice of Bridesmaid dresses say about you?

5. Create a mood board

Now it’s time to get those creative ideas flowing, finally the time has come to take those dreams and make them a reality. But where on earth to begin? Well, nowadays we are spoilt with recources.  Use instagram, pinterest, old photos, vintage shops and of course the internet to help you to create a mood board. This “mood board” can be on the computer, scraps from magazines, get creative (there are tons of options!) Once you begin this will give you a clearer idea of the overall look you want to create, making it easier to see what still needs to be thought through and organised.
